A day in the life – Property Management Assistant

Duncan Black joined Highland Residential in October 2018. He has settled into his new role and has made a positive impact to the team. Duncan says he is happy to be part of such a driven & exuberant team.

Duncan tells us about a typical day in his role as Property Management Assistant at Highland Residential.

Question 1:
What does an average day in your role look like?

My day starts by checking the out of hours website for an issues whilst I was away from the office and follow up any issues that have occurred. Most days vary after this task since my job is so varied. I could be on site at a property conducting a viewing or inspecting a new potential property to let.

Question 2:
What is the biggest challenge you face in your role?

My greatest challenge I find is ensuring all repairs have been conducted and completed in a timely manner. To combat this, I keep in touch with our tenants to confirm the job has been completed to their satisfaction.

What do you like most about working at Highland Residential?

Team, team, team – all about the team! Everybody knows their role and I contribute with my own to keep the company moving forward. Highland Residential encourage you to challenge the status quo to improve the company’s overall performance.

Question 4:
What skills do you think are important to have to carry out the tasks in your role?

Communication and listening skills are extremely useful in this role. I interact with tenants and contractors everyday and keeping everyone happy is a challenge I enjoy.

What advice would you give someone looking to start a career in Property Management?

Dive straight in with a can-do attitude! If you have an interest in this industry, Property Management is a great way to introduce yourself. I would suggest listening to property podcasts and reading up about the nitty-gritty bits too. Get familiar with Scottish Government Property Law and Leglislation that effects our sector.

Question 6:
Outside of work, how do you spend your free time?

I keep myself fit by going to the gym before work every day and if I’m up extra early I’ll take Dash and Dougal (sausage dogs, #dash_and_dougal) out for a walk too. The weekends are usually spent with friends playing golf / hiking or going for exciting walks in the countryside with the poochies!
